ROAD CLOSURES
To provide for the safety of runners, volunteers and spectators, the following roads will be closed to traffic from 8am till noon on the Victoria Day Holiday Monday, May 20th:

..... May Street from Arthur Street to Donald Street.
Every effort will be made to reopen roads to normal vehicular traffic as quickly as possible after the race is completed.
Also, parking will restricted from 8am till noon along Simpson Street from Victoria Avenue to Pacific Avenue.

2013 Easter Seals Drop Zone
103.5 The Thunder is proud to present the 2013 Easter Seals Drop Zone Thunder Bay that will take place Friday, August 16, 2013!
Challenging participants to raise a minimum of $1500 in pledges in order to repel down the 14 stories of Maple Crest Tower.
Everyday people will become ‘Super heroes’ for a day by raising much needed funds for kids with physical disabilities, and challenging themselves in a dizzying, knee- shaking, pulse pounding 14-storey rappel that is both safe and fun!
Superhero spaces in this event are limited… so register today as an individual or as a team!
The rappel is facilitated by Remote Access Technology, a company whose staff are fully certified and highly-
trained in rappelling and rope access. Every possible measure is taken to ensure the safety of the rappellers as
they challenge themselves and change the lives of children and youth with physical disabilities.
All proceeds from Easter Seals Drop Zone Thunder Bay help Ontario’s families of kids with physical disabilities with the cost of expensive mobility equipment, communication devices and fully accessible Easter Seals summer camp. Easter Seals owns and operates two fully accessible camp properties and is recognized as an industry leader in provided specialized recreation programs for kids with physical disabilities.
Since 2005, more than 3,000 superheroes have joined the exclusive Superhero Club for Easter Seals, raising more than $4.79 million dollars for Canadians with disabilities. We invite you to be part of a formidable group of heroes and continue this amazing fundraisng trend in 2013. By doing so you will make a big difference for families living with disabilities.
If you are interested in participating, you might be asking yourself any or all of the following questions:
Is this legal?
Yes! All appropriate authorities have been notified and permits as well as insurance are in place.
Will someone train me?
Yes. Prior to your rappel you will be required to attend at least one mandatory training session provided by our highly trained experts at a local facility. The day of your rappel, you will also go through a review of the safety steps that will ensure you have a safe and fun rappel.
How safe is this?
As with everything, there are risks. It is important that you take the proper training, listen to your rappelling instructors and follow their directions. Everyone involved with your rappel has professional training and accreditation and every effort has been made to ensure you have a safe rappel.
Can I rappel if I have a physical disability?
Absolutely. If required, a trained expert will rappel with you to provide assistance.
How long will it take me to rappel?
Our experts estimate that it will take you any where from 10 – 20 minutes based on the building and the level of your experience.
Can my family and friends come see me rappel?
Only if they like to cheer you on and celebrate your fantastic achievement.
Do I need special gear or clothing?
All essential equipment will be provided, however we encourage you to wear tighter fitting comfortable athletic clothing and non marking sneakers. Superhero outfits are encouraged, especially Marvel, DC, Nintendo, or something of your own design.
Will there be people there to help me?
Yes. Highly trained experts will guide you through the whole process.
Is there an age limit?
Yes. You must be at least the age of majority in your province. If you are 70 and over, please notify your Drop Zone Coordinator.
Is there a weight limit?
If you weigh more than 275 pounds, please let your Drop Zone manager know.
What if I get tired and want to stop?
You can stop to rest quite easily by using the proper technique. Also, either the top or bottom rappelling instructor can also stop you.
What is the rope breaks?
The rope won’t break, or get cut. The rope is designed to hold 4500 kilograms. In addition every possible safety precaution has been implemented to ensure your safety and success during this event. Certified experts, back-up safety lines, participant training, frequent on-site safety checks and many other precautions will be taken prior to and during your rappel.

2013 Celtic Fair Festival at Fort William Historical Park
Concerts and camping under the stars plus a healthy sampling of everything Celtic highlight the Celtic Fair July 19th to 21st at Fort William Historical Park.
Main stage entertainment features an exciting music mix with decidedly international flavour while the heritage site will have plenty of everything Celtic from food and beverages to mementoes on sale to pipe bands and even a wee bit of jousting.
Festivities kick off Friday night, July 19th with the popular Irish Rovers. Known for their syndicated television series and string of hits including “The Unicorn,” and “Wasn’t That a Party,” they have become international ambassadors of Irish music. Natives of Ireland, the group formed in Canada in 1963, and have been performing together for close to 50 years.
Adding some rocking zest is Celtica, featuring their unique sound of blazing bagpipes, mighty drums, and high energy rock highlighted by fire juggling and flame-throwing guitars. They cover the classics in their own unique style, combining the likes of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water" with the traditional, “Scotland the Brave.” A truly international group, band members hail from as far afield as Austria, Scotland, and the USA.
Adding some regional Franco-Ontarian flavour is well-known local performer, Pierre Schreyer. One of Canada's leading traditional fiddlers, Pierre is a fiddle champion, JUNO and Canadian Folk Music nominee as well as the creator of the Canadian Celtic celebration.
Saturday evening, July 20th features four-time Grammy winner, Pat Benatar. A multiple Platinum and Gold seller, Pat has had 14 Top 40 singles, including the 80s classics, “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” as well as “Love is a Battlefield.” Pat is in high demand on the classic rock circuit, having recently toured with Loverboy and Journey in 2012. Pat shares the stage with her husband, accomplished guitarist and producer, Neil Girardo.
Also lighting up the stage is six-time Juno winner Colin James. During his 25-year career, the versatile performer has demonstrated virtuosity with a variety of music genres, including blues, rock, pop, and swing. The multi-platinum album seller has performed with music legends including Bonnie Raitt, Lenny Kravitz, Carlos Santana, Buddy Guy, Mick Fleetwood, and The Chieftains.
Representing the “British Invasion” for the evening is Sweet. Known for hits including “Ballroom Blitz” and “Fox on the Run,” the four-member group will rekindle the ‘glam rock’ period of the early 70s. …2
More local talent is on hand with Flamenco Caravan. Formed in 1999, Flamenco Caravan blends influences ranging from flamenco, jazz, and rock to elements of Latin, sacred and folk music. Led by flamenco guitarist Esteban Figueroa, the group has opened for music notables including Colin James, Jeff Healey, and Paul Shaffer.
For something truly different, the southern Ontario-based Knights of Valor will put on displays of full contact period jousting on the heritage site. Shane Adams, host of the History Channel’s “Full Metal Jousting,” will be on hand to chat with visitors.
Tasty Celtic cuisine and beverages will be available along with a Scotch-tasting session and Mad Mac’s Tavern. The Fair also features local pipe bands, Celtic musicians, jugglers and magicians, puppeteers, Celtic vendors, Highland games, and plenty of activities for the kids.
Patrons can take advantage of the Celtic Fair’s unique “concert and camping” all-inclusive combination packages. RV weekend camp site rates are: $70 with power, $50 without power. Full weekend admission passes are: $60 adults, seniors, students; $30 youths age 6-12; free, kids age 5 and under.

This beautiful 1969 Firebird Convertible is an original, low-mileage (under 75,000) car that’s been well cared for over its lifespan, repaired and reconditioned as needed. You won’t find a glistening chrome engine compartment with the latest in aftermarket performance parts but you will find a constantly maintained 350-cubic-inch Pontiac big-block V8 with 265 horsepower and a whopping 355 ft-lbs of torque linked to the original three-speed automatic and a dual exhaust system. This car is a wonderful highway cruiser that can lay still down some rubber if you really want to.
It rides on Cooper Cobra white-letter radials (215/60 R15 front, 235/60 R15 rear) mounted on the same Rally II optional rims the car had in 1969 (all in great shape).
The Firebird is painted in its original Verdoro green colour and has a white canvas, electrically-operated top that’s in excellent condition (replacing the original black top). Inside you’ll find re-upholstered seats in the same green that the car had when it rolled off the Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant in November of 1969, all the proper floor mats and trim and an upgraded, modern Pioneer sound system

The Thunder Bay Museum has always purchased its raffle cars, and has not acquired any via donation. However, should someone wish to explore the possibility of donating a car for a future raffle, please contact the Museum’s DirectorCurator.
This beautiful 1969 Firebird Convertible is an original, low-mileage (under 75,000) car that’s been well cared for over its lifespan, repaired and reconditioned as needed. You won’t find a glistening chrome engine compartment with the latest in aftermarket performance parts but you will find a constantly maintained 350-cubic-inch Pontiac big-block V8 with 265 horsepower and a whopping 355 ft-lbs of torque linked to the original three-speed automatic and a dual exhaust system. This car is a wonderful highway cruiser that can lay still down some rubber if you really want to.
It rides on Cooper Cobra white-letter radials (215/60 R15 front, 235/60 R15 rear) mounted on the same Rally II optional rims the car had in 1969 (all in great shape).
The Firebird is painted in its original Verdoro green colour and has a white canvas, electrically-operated top that’s in excellent condition (replacing the original black top). Inside you’ll find re-upholstered seats in the same green that the car had when it rolled off the Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant in November of 1969, all the proper floor mats and trim and an upgraded, modern Pioneer sound system

ONTARIO STRONGMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AND FITNESS EXPO
103.5 The Thunder is proud to support The ONTARIO STRONGMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AND FITNESS EXPO!
The Ontario Strongman Championship, The Thunder Bay Fitness Expo and the True Grit Test of Fitness will be held on June 22 and 23rd, at the CLE Coliseum.
This family friendly event will run from noon until 7pm on both days. It will also have a Crossfit competition and will feature a variety of fitness, MMA, sports nutrition, and wellness booths. Come learn how to get fit and healthy while being entertained by the strongest men in Ontario. All proceeds from this event will be donated to Big Brother’s and Big Sisters of Thunder Bay.

For the first time ever, the Ontario Strongman Championship is coming to Northern Ontario and Thunder Bay. This decathlon of strength will have the top strength athletes in Ontario compete in nine heavy events over two days; comparable to those seen on TV for the World’s Strongest Man and the All Strength Challenges. This dynamic sport creates excitement with feats of strength that real people can relate to with competitors lifting heavy and awkward objects.
Will Thunder Bay resident Luke Skaarup defend his Ontario’s Strongest Man title, or will Kyle Rayner, Dallas Hogan or another top strongman win the crown?
For those looking to get involved with this event, there are a limited number booths and tables available for local businesses to rent during the expo. There are 10x10 booths, 10x20 booths and tables available for home based businesses.

103.5 The Thunder is proud to support the 10th Annual Superior North EMS Soapbox Races in support of George Jeffrey Children’s Centre. Sponsored by FORM Architecture Engineering.The Soapbox races will be held June 8 and June 9 at Waverly Park Hill.
In the past 9 years of this event, important funds have been raised to support the works of George Jeffrey Children's Centre. The Centre is dedicated to providing programs and therapeutic services that meet the physical, developmental, and social needs for children and their families dealing with very diverse special needs.
100% of the funds raised stay in our community to support George Jeffrey Children's Centre and their mission of enriching the lives of children and families that they serve.
During this event, children race soapbox cars down Waverly Park Hill. There are single cars as well as two-person cars allowing children with special needs or younger children the opportunity to take part riding down the hill while being chauffeured by a parent or guardian.
Once again adults will be offered a chance to take part in the fun during the “Thrill of the Hill” Adult races on Sunday and have several high schools participating in the “High School Challenge” races on Saturday.

The 15th Annual Dragon Boat Festival will be held July 19 & July 20 at Boulevard Lake.The Dragon Boat Festival is a summer paddle sport event that promotes healthy lifestyles, fosters team building, and gives corporations, organizations and families an opportunity to develop community leadership. Collectively it enriches the quality of life for the citizens of Thunder Bay and region.
Dragon boating is inclusive regardless of age & ability. Celebrating and promoting paddling as a team, work group, recovery support group, or family unit activity; that builds community, resilience and many fond memories.
This year they want to share that experience with everyone, even the very young and their grand-parents!
During the festival lunch break they will take small children, parents, guardians, aunts and uncles, and hopefully grand-parents out on the water; for a few minutes of fun instruction before they challenge other family boats to a short informal race, in front of cheering and appreciative families. Everybody that paddles wins, and earns praise.There will definitely be a photo moment.
Our participation and fundraising efforts give back generously to worthy charities that serve our communities selflessly; improving the quality of life for all of us.

Canadian Cancer Society - Relay for Life 2013
Relay For Life is an inspirational, non-competitive, 12-hour overnight fundraising event that brings you and your community together to celebrate life and fight cancer. Relay has a festival-like atmosphere that your family, friends and co-workers can enjoy regardless of age or fitness level!
Teams of 10-15 people fundraise individually and as a team to help the Canadian Cancer Society save lives and support those who are facing cancer. Relay participants make a commitment to raise at least $100 and are supported with the tools to reach their goals.
At Relay, teams gather with cancer survivors at their local track, stadium or sports field and take turns walking laps all night. Each team keeps at least one member on the track at all times, while all around them the party is in full swing. Teams stay overnight in the decorated tent city, united to enjoy music, food, activities and entertainment and to celebrate life.

Tbaytel is hosting its 2nd Annual E-Waste recycling event in support of PRO Kids Thunder Bay from Friday, May 31st - Sunday, June 2nd. Drop off your old, unwanted or damaged Electronic waste to Tbaytel (1050 Lithium Dr). You will receive one (1) ballot for every item that is dropped off. All ballots will be entered into a draw for an Ipad! All E-waste will be safely and responsibility recycled by GreenTec, so you can feel good about your Spring cleaning!
